An Open Letter
To: Sen. Moody
From: A constituent in Tallahassee, FL
June 6
I just received the message from the senator about USAID and I looked up the examples you gave for “fraud, waste, and abuse”. They were at best somewhat accurate. I am disappointed that you all are using incorrect and misleading information to back up your support for letting children die. Because that is what not funding USAID is doing. Children are dying because we are no longer funding food aid overseas. And your excuse for supporting that is that some of the money also supported diversity programs. How does that not sound evil to you? It sounds evil to me.
You further support your claims that we should let children starve overseas by saying the Cold War is over and we don’t need to combat communism anymore. But you know who is stepping into the soft power place we have abandoned by defunding USAID? China. They are feeding those we have abandoned. China is ruled by their communist party. I’m not sure how little you have to know about foreign affairs to miss this one. Yes, the world has changed. Yet not as much as would be needed to give up on USAID.
And as to waste, not only did we get the soft power while doing the morally right thing of feeding starving children. We supported our own farmers while we did it! We have screwed over our own agricultural sector while killing starving children AND losing our position on the world stage. This is a layer cake of terrible ideas. A feedback loop of us punching ourselves in the face over and over while letting babies die. I hope the senator can rethink her absolutely unsupportable position.
