Oppose Offshore Drilling Expansion — Protect Our Coastal Communities

To: Rep. Gimenez, Sen. Moody, Sen. Scott

From: A constituent in Miami, FL

July 25

I am writing as a concerned constituent to urge you to oppose any legislative efforts that promote the expansion of offshore oil and gas drilling — including recent proposals and energy plans endorsed by the Trump administration. As someone who cares deeply about the future of our coastal communities, I am extremely alarmed by efforts to fast-track offshore drilling. These policies pose direct and long-term risks to our environment, public health, local economies, and national climate resilience. Offshore drilling is not a solution — it’s a threat. Oil spills and industrial accidents, even when infrequent, can devastate fishing industries, harm tourism, destroy marine ecosystems, and severely impact the livelihoods of millions of Americans who live near the coast. The Deepwater Horizon disaster is a sobering example of just how high the stakes are. Furthermore, these drilling expansions move us backward at a time when innovation and energy independence should be focused on clean, renewable sources. Investing in solar, wind, and energy efficiency strengthens our economy and security without jeopardizing our environment or coastal way of life. As your constituent, I ask you to reject any bills or initiatives that promote offshore drilling or weaken environmental safeguards. I urge you to stand with coastal communities — regardless of political affiliation — and protect the natural heritage and economy that make our nation stronger and more resilient.
