Support the Citizens Over Corporations Amendment to Overturn Citizens United
To: Rep. Maloy, Sen. Curtis, Sen. Lee
From: A constituent in Salt Lake City, UT
February 13
I am writing to urge you to support the Citizens Over Corporations Amendment, recently introduced by Congressman Joe Neguse, Senator Adam Schiff, Representative Jim McGovern, and Representative Summer Lee. This constitutional amendment would overturn the Citizens United v. FEC decision and restore the power to limit corporate influence in our elections.
Since the 2010 Citizens United ruling, political spending by billionaires has surged 160-fold. Over $2.7 billion was funneled through super PACs in the 2024 federal election cycle alone. This flood of dark money has transformed our democracy into an auction where the wealthy and well-connected drown out the voices of average citizens. Recent examples, including Elon Musk's significant financial contributions to influence policy decisions, demonstrate how billionaires can use unlimited spending to shape our government.
The Citizens Over Corporations Amendment would grant Congress and states the authority to set reasonable, viewpoint-neutral limitations on campaign fundraising and spending. Critically, it distinguishes between natural persons and corporations, allowing restrictions on corporate election spending while protecting individual rights. The amendment would also enable public financing of campaigns and preserve freedom of the press.
This measure addresses a fundamental threat to our democracy. When corporations and billionaires can pour unlimited funds into elections, they gain disproportionate power over policy decisions that affect all of us. Transparency has been undermined, and the integrity of our electoral system continues to erode with each election cycle.
Organizations including Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, End Citizens United, and Public Citizen have endorsed this amendment because they recognize what is at stake. Our democracy cannot function when money determines outcomes rather than the will of the people.
I urge you to cosponsor and actively support the Citizens Over Corporations Amendment. This is essential to ensuring that every citizen has an equal voice in our democracy, not just those with the deepest pockets.
