Uphold religious freedom, reconsider condemning Bishop Budde's sermon
To: Rep. Fischbach
From: A constituent in Wheaton, MN
January 26, 2025
The proposed resolution condemning the sermon of the Right Reverend Mariann Edgar Budde at the National Prayer Service raises concerning issues about the separation of church and state and freedom of speech. While the National Prayer Service is a tradition, using it as a platform to promote political biases or agendas is inappropriate. However, condemning the sermon's message through a House resolution could be seen as an overreach into matters of faith and a potential infringement on the right to freely express religious beliefs. As representatives, it is crucial to uphold constitutional principles and avoid actions that could be perceived as stifling religious expression or dissent. Rather than condemnation, fostering respectful dialogue and understanding across diverse perspectives would better serve the ideals of a pluralistic society. I urge a reconsideration of this resolution in favor of promoting unity, tolerance, and the shared values that bind us together as a nation.
