An Open Letter

To: Rep. Finstad

From: A verified voter in Blue Earth, MN

October 19

I am writing to express my deep concern over Speaker Mike Johnson’s ongoing refusal to administer the oath of office to Representative-elect Adelita Grijalva, whose election has already been certified by Arizona state officials. Once a member-elect’s credentials are certified, the House has a constitutional obligation to seat that individual. Article VI of the U.S. Constitution requires all federal officers to take an oath to support the Constitution, and Powell v. McCormack (1969) affirmed that the House cannot deny seating to anyone who meets all constitutional qualifications and has been duly elected. By withholding the oath, the Speaker is effectively silencing the voters of an entire district and setting a precedent that endangers every American’s right to representation. This should concern all members, regardless of party. I urge you to: Publicly call for Representative-elect Grijalva to be sworn in immediately, and support or co-sponsor a resolution authorizing the administration of the oath if the Speaker will not do so. This is about preserving the integrity of our constitutional process. Every day of delay denies citizens their voice in the People’s House. Thank you for standing up for fair representation and the rule of law. Please let me know what steps you plan to take to ensure this constitutional duty is fulfilled.
