Ensure humane treatment and due process for detained immigrants.

To: Sen. Washington, Rep. Sharp, Gov. Kehoe

From: A constituent in Kansas City, MO

April 4

The detention of immigrant students like Mahmoud Khalil, Rumeysa Ozturk, and Alireza Doroudi in remote Louisiana facilities with documented human rights abuses is deeply concerning. These students, who were legally residing in the United States, were suddenly arrested and transferred across the country to centers plagued by issues like poor medical care, unsanitary conditions, lack of access to legal counsel, and discrimination. This unjust treatment raises serious questions about our commitment to protecting the rights and well-being of immigrants, including those here legally to pursue higher education. I urge you to take action to address the troubling conditions in these facilities and ensure detained immigrants have access to adequate resources, legal representation, and humane treatment. Transferring detainees far from their communities and support systems only exacerbates an already difficult situation. We must uphold the values of due process, human rights, and compassion in our immigration policies and detention practices. These students and all immigrants deserve to be treated with dignity.
