Subject: Please Oppose the Proposed California State Mileage Tax
I am writing as a constituent to respectfully urge you not to support the newly proposed California state mileage tax.
While I understand the need to maintain and improve our transportation infrastructure, a mileage-based tax places an unfair burden on working Californians—especially those who commute long distances because housing near job centers is unaffordable. For many families, driving is not optional; it is a necessity. This proposal would disproportionately impact rural residents, lower- and middle-income households, seniors, and small business owners who rely on their vehicles to earn a living.
California drivers already shoulder some of the highest fuel taxes, registration fees, and vehicle-related costs in the nation. Adding a mileage tax feels like double taxation and risks further straining household budgets at a time when residents are already grappling with high costs of living, housing, and utilities.
There are also serious concerns around privacy, data collection, and enforcement. Tracking miles driven—whether through technology or reporting—raises questions about government overreach and long-term data security that have not been adequately addressed.
Rather than introducing a new tax on mobility, I urge you to explore more equitable and transparent alternatives for infrastructure funding, including improved efficiency in existing transportation budgets and solutions that do not penalize people simply for getting to work, school, or medical appointments.
I appreciate your service and your attention to the real-world impacts this proposal would have on your constituents. I respectfully ask that you oppose the state mileage tax and advocate for fairer, more sustainable.
