Oppose SB323
To: Sen. Corbin
From: A constituent in Greer, SC
September 5
Senator Corbin,
I am writing as your constituent to voice my strong opposition to SB323, the proposed legislation that would make South Carolina’s abortion law the most extreme in the United States.
This bill is not only profoundly cruel in its elimination of exceptions for rape and incest — it is also demonstrably dangerous to the health of mothers and infants in our state. According to the March of Dimes, states with the most restrictive abortion laws consistently suffer from higher rates of maternal and infant mortality. South Carolina already ranks poorly on these measures, and further restrictions will only worsen outcomes for families across our state.
The removal of exceptions for rape and incest compounds the cruelty. Forcing survivors of such horrific crimes to carry a pregnancy against their will strips them of their most basic human dignity and autonomy. This is not a path toward valuing life — it is a policy of retraumatization and harm.
If enacted, SB323 will make South Carolina an outlier not because of leadership, but because of extremism. Instead of improving maternal care, investing in prenatal health, and expanding access to affordable healthcare, this bill prioritizes political ideology over the lives and well-being of women and children.
I urge you, Senator, to reject SB323. South Carolina deserves laws that protect life, health, and dignity — not laws that endanger mothers, punish survivors, and worsen health outcomes for our most vulnerable.
