I am participating in a weeklong boycott from Amazon out of grave concern on multiple fronts about the prevalence of Amazon’s services in our culture, and also concern for the environment. But the reason I am writing today is a specific one. I am writing to ask why antitrust laws haven’t been invoked against Amazon web services. Without this single company, the Internet ceases to function. The web based services that are woven into the fabric of our entire countries daily lives run through Amazon’s servers. It is a monopoly and a monoculture, and it occurs to me that it is the infrastructure for a surveillance state to punish descent. Because of the speed and scope of Trump‘s executive orders, and the fact that they are largely going unchecked, I believe that we are one signature away from this infrastructure being conscripted for “national security.” Our democracy is not safe when we are so dependent on a single company. Amazon web services needs to be broken up. It’s critically important.
