What Is Our State’s Plan to Protect Voters and Polling Places?

To: Sen. Gannon, Gov. Ayotte, Rep. Harb, Rep. Melvin, Rep. Summers, Rep. Meuse

From: A constituent in South Hampton, NH

October 5

I am writing as a constituent and voter to ask what safeguards our state has established for the November 3 election if federal military, immigration, or other armed federal personnel appear at or near polling locations. Federal law contains specific protections against military interference with elections and voter intimidation, including 18 U.S.C. §§ 592–594 and Section 11(b) of the Voting Rights Act. I respectfully ask: What is our state’s protocol if armed federal personnel appear at or near a polling location? Who determines whether their presence or activity is lawful? Who immediately contacts state legal authorities if intervention or emergency judicial review becomes necessary? What instructions have local election officials received? How will evidence of any incident be documented and preserved? How will voters receive reliable information quickly without creating unnecessary fear or confusion? These are contingency questions, not predictions about what will occur. I would appreciate knowing what procedures are already in place and where voters should report concerns on Election Day. Thank you for helping ensure that every eligible voter can cast a ballot safely and without intimidation.
