Urgent Oversight of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Operations
To: Rep. Steil
From: A verified voter in Pleasant Prairie, WI
January 30
I am writing to you today as a constituent to express my profound concern regarding the current trajectory of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). I am calling on you to exercise your oversight authority to oppose the agency’s documented history of unconstitutional actions and to advocate for a fundamental restructuring of how federal law enforcement interacts with our communities.
The reports of ICE's conduct are deeply unsettling and represent a departure from the protections guaranteed by the Bill of Rights. Specifically, I am concerned about:
1) Violations of Due Process: There is a mountain of irrefutable evidence of arrests conducted without judicial warrants, violating Fourth Amendment protections against unreasonable searches and seizures.
2) Targeting of American Citizens: The illegal detention and wrongful deaths of U.S. citizens while in custody highlight a systemic failure in the agency's processes and a disregard for the safety of those it encounters.
3) Humanitarian Concerns: Overwhelming evidence of physical brutalization and the denial of medical care within detention facilities. A badge is not a license to bypass the human rights of any individual on U.S. soil.
As our representative, YOU HAVE A RESPONSIBILITY TO ENSURE THAT FEDERAL AGENCIES OPERATE WITHIN THE BOUNDS OF THE LAW AND REMAIN ACCOUNTABLE TO THE PUBLIC. You took an oath, and the people expect you to fulfill it.
I urge you to support legislation that increases ICE oversight, limits its ability to conduct warrantless arrests, and ENSURES THAT THE AGENCY AND ITS AGENTS ARE HELD LEGALLY RESPONSIBLE for harm and loss of life resulting from its operations.
I look forward to hearing about the steps you will take to protect the constitutional rights of ALL people in The United States. History wil remember and judge how you conduct yourself in this moment. How do you want to be remembered?
