Uphold Independent Commission's Redistricting Plan for Utah

To: Gov. Cox, Sen. Plumb, Rep. Dailey-Provost

From: A constituent in Salt Lake City, UT

September 6

The ongoing legal battle over Utah's congressional redistricting process demands immediate attention and action. As a concerned citizen, I urge you to support the implementation of the redistricting plan already drawn by the independent commission, as established by the 2018 Better Boundaries initiative (Proposition 4). The Utah Supreme Court has ruled that the Legislature violated our state constitution by repealing Proposition 4, a clear mandate from voters to limit partisan gerrymandering. Now, Republican lawmakers are attempting to further delay the process by asking the court to halt the lower court judge's order for new congressional districts. This is unacceptable and goes against the will of the people. The independent commission, created through Proposition 4, has already completed its work and produced a set of fair, non-partisan maps. These maps represent the outcome of a process that Utah voters approved to ensure fair representation. By implementing these existing maps, we can avoid the rushed and potentially flawed process currently proposed, which gives the Legislature until September 25 to produce a draft, followed by a mere 10 days for public comment before a special session on October 6. Time is of the essence. The 2026 elections may seem distant, but proper implementation of fair districts requires careful planning and execution. Delaying this process further only serves to undermine the democratic principles our state should uphold. This redistricting issue is not just a local concern but part of a national struggle against gerrymandering that directly impacts the composition of the U.S. House of Representatives. By taking a stand for fair redistricting, Utah can set an example for other states grappling with similar challenges. I implore you to respect the will of Utah voters, honor the state Supreme Court's ruling, and push for the immediate adoption of the maps already drawn by the independent commission. This action would not only save time and resources but also restore faith in our democratic processes. The integrity of our elections and the fair representation of all Utahns depend on your commitment to this cause.
