Oppose Politicization of Justice Department in Comey Indictment

To: Sen. Graham, Sen. Scott, Rep. Clyburn

From: A constituent in Johns Island, SC

September 27, 2025

I am deeply concerned about the recent indictment of former FBI Director James Comey, which appears to be a dangerous politicization of our justice system. This indictment, signed by Lindsey Halligan, the newly appointed U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, seems to be part of a broader pattern of using the Department of Justice as a tool for settling political scores. The charges against Comey—one count of false statements to Congress and one count of obstruction of a congressional proceeding—are remarkably flimsy. They stem from his 2020 testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee regarding media leaks about FBI investigations involving Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton. The lack of substantial evidence supporting these charges is alarming and raises serious questions about the ethical implications of bringing such a case forward. This indictment sets a dangerous precedent that threatens the integrity of our justice system. It's crucial to maintain the independence of the Department of Justice from political influence. The apparent willingness of officials to bend to presidential pressure undermines public trust in our institutions and the rule of law. I urge you to speak out against this abuse of power and take concrete steps to protect the independence of the Justice Department. This could include calling for an investigation into the circumstances surrounding this indictment, supporting legislation to strengthen safeguards against political interference in the DOJ, or demanding transparency about the decision-making process that led to these charges. The politicization of justice is a threat to our democracy. We must act now to prevent further erosion of our institutional norms and to ensure that the Department of Justice serves the American people, not political interests. Your voice and action on this matter are crucial for preserving the integrity of our justice system and upholding the principles of our democracy.
