Oppose President Trump’s unconstitutional acts of war against Iran
To: Rep. Cutler, Sen. Adams, Gov. Cox
From: A constituent in Farmington, UT
June 22
It is extremely concerning to learn that the President engaged in direct military action against Iran without proper Congressional authorization and in direct opposition to the Constitution. Ordering strikes or deploying troops to a war zone are momentous decisions that should not be made unilaterally by the executive branch. The founders clearly vested the power to declare war with Congress as representatives of the American people precisely to prevent any one person from plunging the nation into an armed conflict without public deliberation and consent. While national security must be safeguarded, usurping Congress's exclusive war powers erodes a foundational principle of American democracy - that the people govern themselves through their elected representatives. I urge you to forcefully condemn President Trump’s unconstitutional actions against Iran and reassert Congress's constitutional war powers prerogative. Allowing the President to sideline the legislative branch on such a grave matter sets a dangerous precedent that corrodes the system of checks and balances so vital to preserving liberty. Whether or not military engagement is warranted, the decision rightly belongs to Congress after thorough public discourse. Upholding this principle transcends any specific policy stance and protects core tenets of self-governance. If allowed to continue on this authoritarian path, President Trump will lead the United States into dictatorship and destabilization never before seen.
