Promote free trade, rein in unilateral tariff powers

To: Sen. Curtis, Rep. Maloy, Sen. Lee

From: A constituent in Salt Lake City, UT

May 2

The Senate's bipartisan effort to rebuke President Trump's extensive tariffs and trade war policies has unfortunately been thwarted by Vice President Vance's tie-breaking vote, demonstrating the administration's unwavering commitment to these economically damaging measures. While intended to boost domestic industries, the tariffs have instead resulted in higher consumer costs, strained relations with allies, and a slowing economy according to numerous economic analyses. The failed resolution aimed to revoke the national emergency declaration enabling unilateral tariff imposition. I implore you to continue fighting to curb the president's authority on tariffs and promote free trade policies that prioritize American consumers, businesses reliant on global supply chains, and international economic cooperation over escalating protectionism and trade conflicts. The people deserve relief from bearing the costs of an unnecessary trade war.
