I am a constituent from Easton, writing about the authority to order the first use of nuclear weapons.
Recent reporting includes unconfirmed but widely circulated warnings that the administration may be weighing a nuclear strike on Iran's Pickaxe Mountain site. I can't verify those claims, and the administration has denied similar ones. But the White House has also declined to rule out nuclear options, and the fact that this question is being asked at all shows a gap that Congress should close.
Under current practice, one person can order a first nuclear strike with no congressional approval. A decision with consequences this large and this irreversible should not rest with any single individual, whoever holds the office.
I ask that you:
1. Publicly support the Restricting First Use of Nuclear Weapons Act (S. 192 / H.R. 669), or another measure requiring congressional authorization before any first use of nuclear weapons.
2. Press for hearings and oversight on current U.S. nuclear first-use policy and any recent changes to it.
3. Tell me where you stand on this issue.
Thank you for your time and service.
