The NPR story about a draft Pentagon memo proposing to end long-standing cooperation with Scouting America is deeply concerning. If this draft reflects actual intent, it would break from more than a century of shared history between two institutions rooted in service, leadership, and commitment to the nation. For generations, Scouting has provided consistency and community for military families, both in the U.S. and overseas. Troops on bases give children stability during deployments and frequent moves. The armed forces have also played a major role in events like the National Jamboree, where service members and Scouts work together and build mutual respect. It’s no surprise that a significant percentage of military officers and enlistees come from Scouting backgrounds—the program develops responsibility, resilience, and leadership in ways few youth organizations can match. The claim that Scouting is “no longer a meritocracy” misunderstands the program entirely. Ranks and badges are earned through genuine effort, skill-building, and character development. Every Eagle Scout can attest to the determination and dedication required. The ideals of service, preparedness, and duty to country remain central to the program and evident in the actions of Scouts nationwide. Young people today face significant challenges, and they need strong, values-driven programs more than ever. Undermining the relationship between Scouting and the military would hurt the very families who rely on this partnership, especially those serving the nation abroad who count on Scouting for stability and positive youth development. Rather than stepping back, leaders should reinforce their support for Scouting. The movement has proven its ability to shape principled, service-minded citizens, and continued cooperation strengthens not only the program but the nation itself. This moment calls for voices that stand with Scouting and recognize its enduring value. Supporting the movement isn’t just about preserving tradition—it’s about investing in the next generation of leaders who live out the ideals of service, integrity, and duty every day.
