Vote No on the "Defining Male and Female Act of 2024"

To: Sen. Scott, Sen. Graham, Rep. Timmons

From: A constituent in Greenville, SC

November 26

I'm writing in response to a bill that has recently been proposed by Sen. Roger Marshall, the "Defining Male and Female Act of 2024." I strongly believe that this bill is a bid to reduce individual freedoms of Americans, and violate their rights, and should not be passed. The press release concerning the bill claims that there is confusion over "sex as a biological truth," and that "we must codify the legal definition of sex based on science." If the writers of these documents were actually up-to-date on the scientific evidence and discussions of gender and sex, they would know that the actual scientific community is largely in agreement that sex and gender are interelated, but still seperate, spectrums, upon which a variety of identities can exist, all of which are created by a combination of biological sex traits and socially constructed concepts. To suggest otherwise is ignorance parading as skepticism or science. Not only is this bigotry based on outdated information, it is a bald-faced effort to reduce and restrict the rights of people to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. It would create two strict categories for people to fall into LEGALLY, allowing any number of legislation to target those legal categories specifically, as well as exclude any people who fall outside of those rigidly and unscientifically defined categories. For example, amendments to the constitution have largely been used to expand the protections those documents provide citizens to include a wider group, such as women and racial minorities, and their language was carefully constructed so as to not be misinterpreted as excluding anyone from a group yet-to-be-defined. Attempting to strictly define human gender expression into two rigid categories will only allow discrimination against intersex, gender non-conforming, and transgender individuals, and thus violating the rights they have as citizens. Please do everything in your power to prevent this unscientific and harmful bill from passing. Thank you.
