Oppose HB 1334, SB 171, and SB 245: Protect Women and Family Planning Options
To: Gov. Braun, Sen. Qaddoura, Rep. DeLaney
From: A constituent in Indianapolis, IN
January 26
I am writing to express my strong opposition to House Bill 1334, Senate Bill 171, and Senate Bill 245. These proposed bills not only strip away essential rights but impose extreme and dangerous restrictions on reproductive healthcare, jeopardizing the health, autonomy, and well-being of Hoosier women and families. Here are my key concerns with these bills: House Bill 1334 This bill redefines “human being” to include unborn children in the criminal code and removes vital protections for abortion under circumstances such as rape, incest, or medical emergencies. It criminalizes medical decisions and creates barriers for individuals and families seeking fertility treatments like in vitro fertilization (IVF). Most importantly, it robs Hoosier women of the right to choose what is best for their bodies and families. Senate Bill 171 & Senate Bill 245 These bills ban the use and distribution of abortion-inducing medications like Mifepristone and Misoprostol, even when used for miscarriage care. They would: • Criminalize doctors and healthcare providers, imposing severe penalties for prescribing or possessing abortion-inducing medications. • Prohibit nonprofit organizations from offering financial assistance for abortion-related medications, limiting support for vulnerable populations. • Require individuals pregnant from rape or incest to provide an affidavit before accessing abortion services—an invasive and harmful requirement that retraumatizes survivors. • Ban state employee health plans, Medicaid, and private insurers from covering abortion-inducing drugs, leaving women without access to essential care. This overreach into private medical decisions is appalling and deeply hypocritical. For a party that advocates for small government, these bills represent extreme government interference in the lives and bodies of Hoosier women. A Call for Focus on Real Issues Instead of legislating women’s rights to their bodies, I urge Indiana lawmakers to focus on real priorities that strengthen families and communities: • Improving access to affordable healthcare, including maternal care. • Strengthening education systems and job opportunities for Hoosiers. • Protecting democracy and supporting the well-being of all Indiana families. These bills are not about protecting life—they are about controlling women and their healthcare decisions. This dangerous agenda criminalizes doctors, penalizes patients, and exacerbates inequities in healthcare access, all while stripping away the fundamental freedoms that Hoosiers deserve. As your constituent, I implore you to vote NO on House Bill 1334, Senate Bill 171, and Senate Bill 245. Stand for a future where Indiana is a place of compassion, equity, and opportunity—not fear, punishment, and oppression. Thank you for considering my concerns. I trust that you will stand with Hoosier families and against these harmful bills.
