Demand Use of SNAP Contingency Fund to Protect Food Security
To: Gov. DeWine
From: A constituent in Dayton, OH
October 29
I am writing to express my strong support for the lawsuit filed by 25 states and Washington D.C. against the Trump administration regarding the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). The administration's refusal to utilize the $6 billion emergency contingency fund for SNAP is not only unlawful but also threatens the well-being of over 40 million low-income Americans who rely on this crucial program.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture's decision to allow SNAP funds to run out in November, citing potential needs for emergencies like natural disasters, is short-sighted and cruel. This would mark the first time in the program's history that funds would not be distributed, potentially depriving millions of Americans of essential grocery assistance. The negative health impacts of food insecurity, especially on children, cannot be overstated.
While the USDA has blamed Democrats for the fund running dry, it is the administration's responsibility to use available resources to support vulnerable citizens. Even if the contingency fund only covers about 60% of one month's benefits, it would provide critical support during this unprecedented government shutdown, now in its 28th day.
I urge you to take immediate action to support this lawsuit and pressure the administration to release the contingency funds. Additionally, please work to ensure that states using their own funds to cover shortfalls will receive federal reimbursement. The health and well-being of millions of Americans hang in the balance, and we cannot afford to play politics with such a vital program.
Time is of the essence. With the fund set to run out in November, we need swift action to prevent a crisis. Please use your position to advocate for the immediate release of these funds and to support legislation that strengthens and protects SNAP for the future. The consequences of inaction will be dire for our most vulnerable citizens, and it is our duty to ensure their basic needs are met.
