Maintain robust federal disaster response through FEMA

To: Sen. Shaheen, Sen. Hassan, Rep. Goodlander

From: A constituent in Allenstown, NH

March 25

The potential elimination of FEMA by the administration raises serious concerns about the federal government's ability to effectively respond to natural disasters and emergencies. FEMA plays a critical role in coordinating disaster relief efforts, providing essential resources and support to affected communities. Removing this crucial agency would leave a significant void and undermine our nation's resilience in times of crisis. While promoting state and local involvement in disaster preparedness is commendable, completely dismantling FEMA would be counterproductive. States often lack the resources and capabilities to handle large-scale emergencies on their own, necessitating federal assistance and coordination. FEMA's expertise, resources, and established networks are invaluable assets that cannot be easily replicated or replaced. FEMA should remain within the Department of Homeland Security to maintain a cohesive and integrated approach to emergency management. We urge you to protect FEMA and its vital functions, while exploring reforms that enhance its effectiveness rather than diminishing its capacity. Maintaining a robust federal disaster response agency is essential for safeguarding lives, properties, and communities during times of crisis. Ensuring FEMA's continued existence and empowering it to fulfill its mandate should be a priority for our nation's well-being and security.
