Maintain equitable school disciplinary policies for student success

To: Rep. Gutierrez, Gov. Hobbs, Rep. Mathis, Sen. Sundareshan

From: A constituent in Tucson, AZ

April 25

This executive order allowing discriminatory disciplinary practices in schools will disproportionately harm students of color, especially those with disabilities. Data shows Black students with disabilities account for 25% of students suspended or expelled, despite making up only 16% of the student population. Harsh disciplinary measures negatively impact academic achievement and mental health, perpetuating systemic inequities. We must oppose this at all appropriate levels but particularly at the state level to maintain preventive, evidence-based disciplinary policies that recognize historical marginalization rather than a colorblind approach ignoring these disparities. Equitable practices are crucial for the success of all students.
