Protect Children: Oppose Idaho Child Care Deregulation

To: Sen. Rabe

From: A verified voter in Boise, ID

February 27, 2025

This proposed legislation to deregulate child care facilities in Idaho raises significant concerns about the potential for compromising child safety and well-being. Removing adult-to-child ratio requirements and allowing childcare workers to be out of sight and sound of the children could lead to overcrowding, neglect, and even tragic incidents. The ratios and supervision standards are in place for valid reasons - to ensure proper care and attention for every child. Child care providers already face immense challenges with low wages and demanding workloads. Deregulation would only exacerbate these issues, potentially driving more workers away from the industry and leaving remaining staff overwhelmed. This could foster an environment ripe for abuse and neglect to occur. Furthermore, the lack of oversight and standards would jeopardize the development and safety of our most vulnerable populations - infants, toddlers, and young children. During these critical years, consistent quality care and appropriate adult supervision are essential for healthy growth. Rather than pursuing deregulation that endangers children, we should be working to strengthen the child care system. This includes improving worker compensation, providing resources for adequate staffing, and upholding safety protocols. Our children's well-being must be the top priority. I urge you to reconsider this misguided legislation and focus efforts on fortifying, not dismantling, child protection measures in our state.
