I am a constituent in Asheville, and I am writing to express my anger at the President's October 9 agreement with Vladimir Putin to buy Russian diesel.
One month ago, the President signed a sweeping sanctions law meant to choke off the energy revenue that pays for Russia's war. Now, weeks before the midterms, he has agreed to take millions of tons of Russian diesel, and Treasury has issued a license to let it flow. The White House will not even say who is paying for it.
This is political nihilism dressed up as economic policy. It trades away American credibility and Ukrainian lives for a few cents at the pump before an election. Every dollar that reaches Moscow under this deal helps fund missiles aimed at Ukrainian cities, and it tells every ally we have that our commitments last only until they become politically inconvenient.
Congress wrote the sanctions law. Congress should defend it. I ask you to:
1. Publicly oppose this deal.
2. Demand that Treasury rescind the license.
3. Hold oversight hearings on the deal's terms, including who is paying and how much.
I would like a response stating where you stand.
