I’m writing to urge immediate opposition to the administration’s decision to freeze leases for offshore wind projects under construction along the East Coast. This move injects uncertainty into billions of dollars of private investment, threatens thousands of good-paying jobs, and undermines U.S. energy security at the exact moment demand is accelerating.
Energy demand is outpacing supply. Electricity prices remain volatile. At the same time, the United States is racing to build the data centers, transmission, and grid resilience required to support advanced manufacturing and AI infrastructure that will define the next era of economic growth. Halting clean, domestic energy projects that are already permitted and under construction is the opposite of a serious energy strategy.
Offshore wind is a strategic asset for the Northeast. These projects diversify our energy mix, reduce exposure to fuel price shocks, and strengthen grid reliability in densely populated coastal regions where demand is highest. They also anchor supply chains, ports, and skilled trades in New Jersey and across the region—investments that cannot be easily replaced once lost.
The administration’s invocation of unspecified “national security” concerns is especially troubling. Abruptly freezing lawful leases after companies have committed capital sends a chilling signal to investors and allies alike. It weakens America’s credibility, slows deployment of domestic energy, and increases reliance on fossil fuels and foreign supply—all of which cut against real national security.
I urge you to use every available tool—oversight, legislation, appropriations, and litigation where appropriate—to reverse this decision, protect projects already in progress, and reaffirm a clear, durable federal commitment to offshore wind. We need more energy, not less; more certainty, not whiplash; and policies that strengthen American competitiveness rather than sabotage it.
