An Open Letter
To: Sen. Tillis
From: A verified voter in Concord, NC
June 29, 2025
I am writing to sincerely thank you for your recent vote against the Senate’s version of the budget reconciliation bill, as reported in The Hill (“Trump threatens to back Tillis primary challengers after no vote on ‘big, beautiful bill,’” June 27, 2025). Your decision demonstrated a principled stand for the people of North Carolina at a time when pressure to fall in line was intense.
While the bill may have been labeled “big and beautiful,” its substance posed serious threats to our state—particularly to the health and well-being of rural communities. Deep cuts to Medicaid would have decimated rural hospitals across North Carolina, many of which are already operating on the brink. These hospitals are lifelines, not only for emergency and routine medical care, but for jobs, stability, and the survival of entire communities. Gutting Medicaid would worsen health outcomes for everyone living in those areas, with ripple effects felt far beyond the hospital walls.
Your vote recognized that responsible governance requires more than political posturing—it demands integrity, foresight, and the courage to say no when the consequences are too great. Thank you for standing up for what is right, even in the face of political threats. Many North Carolinians are grateful to have a Senator who prioritizes the long-term well-being of our communities over short-term political gain.
