Subject: Demand Transparency in Selecting Congressional Leadership
I strongly urge you to support a more open and transparent process for selecting leadership in both the House and Senate.
Although Americans do not directly elect the Speaker of the House or Senate Majority Leader, these individuals wield enormous influence over our legislative agenda, national priorities, and the direction of our government. The public deserves more than an internal party caucus and closed-door negotiations to determine who will hold these important positions.
Leadership candidates should be required to participate in public debates and forums, giving Americans the opportunity to hear their positions, understand their priorities, and evaluate their temperament, communication skills, and ability to lead.
A new congressional majority should reflect the will of the people, not simply the preferences and political relationships established within an internal caucus. Voters deserve to know who will represent them, what these leaders stand for, and how they intend to deliver on the mandate for change.
The final selection should remain with elected members of Congress, but the deliberations leading to that decision should be open to public scrutiny.
Leadership demands accountability. Transparency builds trust. Anything less risks undermining public confidence in these critically important positions.
Please champion public debates and a more transparent leadership selection process. The American people deserve a voice in understanding who will lead, even if they do not cast the final vote.
