Getting embroiled in a protracted conflict with Iran would undoubtedly have severe economic consequences and result in tragic loss of innocent lives on all sides. While the Iranian nuclear program poses a serious threat, military intervention carries enormous risks and potentially devastating humanitarian costs that must be carefully weighed. Before further escalation, I urge Congress to assert its constitutional authority over decisions of war and peace, thoroughly evaluate all diplomatic alternatives, and avoid reckless actions that could needlessly endanger American troops and civilian populations. Cooler heads must prevail to find a pathway toward de-escalation and a negotiated resolution that enhances regional stability while preventing a nuclear-armed Iran through robust inspections and verification mechanisms. The human and economic toll of another interminable Middle East conflict should give all parties pause.
