I think that I sort of get it. When the Big Beautiful Bill was proposed, the GOP really needed a win. If it had said explicitly that the enormous appropriation towards DHS/ICE would be spent towards opening detention facilities with conditions that lack basic human rights, you might have paused, right? If it had been clear that these detention facilities prevent the inhabitants (most with no criminal record) from seeing daylight and eating fresh food, you probably would have gone, "wait a minute." Right? Well, now there are proposed facilities like this right here in NC, the state that you represent, as well as across the country. I imagine that you didn't fully comprehend what you were voting for. Right now is the chance to give some clarity about what you were voting for. Were you voting to give DHS/ICE blanket permission to shoot American citizens in their city of residence? Were you voting for masked agents to invade our homes? Were you voting for five-year-olds to be used as bait to detain their parents and then put a parent and child in one of the detention facilities? Congress has an opportunity and an obligation to clarify what is right and what is wrong as we go about immigration enforcement. You voted in the funds for them to do things right. Now, hold them to it. Join with the side of reason and support guardrails on ICE/CBP behavior. Because right now, they're the ones making our communities unsafe.
