Restore Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monuments

To: Sen. Curtis, Sen. Lee, Rep. Maloy

From: A constituent in Salt Lake City, UT

July 14

Fight back against Trump's illegal gutting of Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante. The president does not have the authority to shrink national monuments — the Antiquities Act of 1906 grants the executive power to create protections, not strip them. This is the same unlawful move he tried in his first term, and Biden had to clean it up. Congress cannot let that cycle repeat. Bears Ears is the ancestral homeland of the Navajo Nation, Hopi Tribe, Ute Indian Tribe, Ute Mountain Ute Tribe, and Pueblo of Zuni. Cutting 1.5 million acres of protected land from each monument doesn't just erase landscapes — it erases irreplaceable cultural history, including rock art that has survived for centuries. The Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance is already heading to court. Your office should be standing alongside them, not waiting on the sidelines. Co-sponsor legislation to restore these monuments and make clear that Congress will not rubber-stamp executive overreach on public lands. This land belongs to all of us — and to the tribes whose heritage it holds.
