An Open Letter

To: Rep. Mathis, Rep. Gutierrez

From: A constituent in Tucson, AZ

June 8

This bill seeks to codify extensive "parental rights" regarding access to student records and control over curriculum related to mental and physical health topics. While the intent may be to increase transparency, such overreach risks compromising the wellbeing and privacy of LGBTQ+ students. Empowering parents to restrict educational content addressing gender identity and sexual orientation promotes an unwelcoming environment. Moreover, allowing unfettered access to confidential student records raises concerns over outing LGBTQ+ youth against their will. I urge you to consider the negative impacts this could have on an already vulnerable population and amend the legislation to safeguard student privacy and ensure schools remain inclusive spaces.
