I am writing to express my deep concern about the U.S. government’s involvement in deporting individuals to the CECOT prison in El Salvador. Conditions at this facility are well-documented as inhumane, with overcrowding, physical abuse, and the denial of basic needs like food, water, and medical care. Many of those sent to CECOT have not been charged with any crimes and are held in a state of legal limbo.
While state legislatures do not directly control foreign policy, I believe there are important actions our state can take to address this issue and defend human rights. I respectfully ask that you:
Publicly condemn U.S. involvement in sending individuals to CECOT and the conditions they face. A statement from our state would demonstrate our commitment to human rights and dignity.
Call on Congress to block any funding that supports U.S. involvement in CECOT, ensuring that taxpayer money is not being used to fund these abuses.
Support human rights advocacy by collaborating with organizations working on this issue and encouraging federal action to halt the deportations and investigate the prison’s practices.
I urge you to take these steps to bring attention to this grave situation.
