The proposed legislation to terminate the Department of Education is concerning and should not be passed. Eliminating this crucial federal agency would have severe negative impacts on educational opportunities, equity, and support systems across the nation. The Department of Education plays a vital role in enforcing civil rights laws prohibiting discrimination in education programs and activities. It administers programs that supplement state and local funding for schools, provides grants and loans to help students pursue higher education, collects data on schools to guide education policy, and much more. Dismantling it would undermine key efforts to promote academic achievement, uphold education standards, and ensure equal access. Education is one of the most powerful tools for socioeconomic mobility and national progress. Abolishing the Department of Education would be a drastic step backwards that risks disadvantaging millions of students, especially those from underserved communities already facing systemic barriers. I strongly urge against passing this bill and instead call for strengthening the Department's capacity to uplift the youth and workforce of America through quality education for all.
