Urgent Concern: ICE Actions Putting New Jersey Families at Risk
To: Sen. Kim, Sen. Booker
From: A constituent in Pennington, NJ
January 15
Recent actions by Immigration and Customs Enforcement have crossed a moral and legal line, and as a New Jersey resident I am demanding clear answers on what is being done to protect my family and community from abuse of power. Reports of aggressive raids, people detained without clear cause, lack of transparency, and fear being used as a tactic are unacceptable in a state that claims to value civil rights and due process.
I want to know what specific, concrete steps are being taken right now to rein in ICE operations in New Jersey. What oversight exists to prevent unlawful stops, warrantless arrests, and intimidation of residents? How are you ensuring that state or local resources are not being used to assist these actions? What protections are in place for mixed-status families, children, and long-term residents who are being terrorized by enforcement tactics that feel punitive rather than lawful?
This is not an abstract policy issue. Fear of detention or family separation affects whether people go to work, seek medical care, or report crimes. That makes everyone in New Jersey less safe. General statements of concern are not enough. I am demanding transparency, accountability, and visible action to defend the rights and dignity of residents.
If ICE is operating within the law, that should be demonstrated through real oversight and firm limits. If it is not, your offices must act to stop it. My family and my neighbors deserve to know that our elected officials will stand between us and unchecked federal enforcement that treats people as disposable.
