I write to you not as a partisan, but as a deeply concerned American. Reporting indicates that President Trump is considering suspending the writ of habeas corpus. I believe this would represent a fundamental attack on the Constitution and the rights it enshrines. It is not just a gross overreach—it is an impeachable offense, and must be treated as such. Habeas corpus is not a convenient option nor is it a partisan issue! It is a cornerstone of our democracy intended to protect every American from tyranny and unlawful imprisonment. The Constitution is clear; its suspension is only permissible in times of rebellion or invasion—not at the whim of any one man. If the Trump administration is so certain of their actions, why can’t they defend them in a court of law? This is not politics as usual. This is a test of whether our institutions—especially Congress—can still function as guardrails when democracy is under threat. You may not share my political leanings, but you swore an oath before God to support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic. If we still share this belief, I urge you to publicly declare that any attempt by President Trump to suspend habeas corpus outside of constitutional bounds will be met with unified, immediate opposition from Congress. That you will oppose such actions, and use the full power of your office to prevent them, undo them, and remove from office any president who attempts them! Our founders lived under an abusive system and knew that such a thing could happen again. They did not design our system with the assumption that we would always agree—but with the hope that principled people would rise to defend it when it mattered most. That time is now.
