As a Richmond based constituent I am excited and hopeful for the future following a historic rout in the midterms. As Democrats look ahead, I’m reaching out to oppose Chuck Schumer and Hakeem Jeffries as majority leaders. The election showed voters are not only exhausted by Republican policies, but tired of the status quo. It is time for Democratic leadership to refresh and reset. Therefore, I respectfully request your vote for changes in leadership when you convene in the coming weeks. In particular, I am concerned about the outsized influence of AIPAC in decision making, as well as the questionable choice for Jeffries to privately meet with Jared Kushner before the midterms. I understand bipartisan support to be a net-positive, but further legitimizing Kushner’s unaccountable political influence is the exact kind of politicking voters resoundingly rejected. Tacit approval of blatant corruption is not the accountability the American people deserve or mandated in the voting booth. For Schumer, he has been at the helm for senate Democrats for 10 years. While important to choose someone who has experience, that decade has been politically tumultuous to say the least. Schumer has become a wildly unpopular figure and appears to lack the ability to bridge the gap between the moderates and progressives. Choosing him as Majority Leader risks stymieing the gains made at the polls. The chance to affect real legislative change while simultaneously holding those who’ve endangered our country liable has been gifted to you by millions of voters. I look forward to Virginia’s part in both and in building a brighter future.
