Reject harmful voter suppression bill SAVE Act

To: Rep. Mfume, Sen. Alsobrooks, Sen. Van Hollen

From: A constituent in Baltimore, MD

February 4

The SAVE Act (HR22/S128) is a harmful piece of legislation that would disenfranchise millions of eligible voters across the United States. This bill would require all states to adopt strict voter ID laws, despite numerous studies showing such laws disproportionately burden communities of color, the elderly, students, people with disabilities, and low-income Americans. Voter impersonation is exceedingly rare, making these restrictions an unnecessary barrier to the fundamental right to vote. Furthermore, the SAVE Act would mandate documentary proof of citizenship to register to vote - a policy that could prevent up to 7 million eligible voters from participating in elections due to lack of access to documents like passports or birth certificates. This undue burden violates the 14th Amendment's guarantee of equal protection under the law. Protecting the integrity of elections is crucial, but the SAVE Act (HR22/S128) does nothing to improve security while actively suppressing the votes of millions. I urge you to reject this egregious attempt at voter suppression that undermines our democracy.
