Support Three-Year Extension of ACA Enhanced Subsidies in the Senate

To: Sen. Moody, Sen. Scott

From: A constituent in Saint Petersburg, FL

February 3

I am writing to urge you to support a three-year extension of the enhanced subsidies for the Affordable Care Act in the Senate. The House did the right thing by passing this extension, and now the Senate must act immediately to provide relief to constituents who are struggling with unaffordable premiums. We are already one month into 2026, and many of us are falling behind on our premiums while waiting for Congress to act. According to the Congressional Budget Office, 4 million people could become uninsured due to the expired enhanced subsidies. When combined with potential Medicaid cuts, this number could reach 15 million people, representing the largest increase in the uninsured population in a short period of time. The uncertainty has already affected enrollment, with 23 million people signing up for ACA plans this year, down more than 1 million from last year. Marketplace directors warn that once consumers drop coverage, getting them back is twice as hard as retaining them and significantly more costly. Health policy experts predict more people will drop coverage in coming months if premiums remain unaffordable. A KFF poll published in January found that two-thirds of Americans believe Congress did the wrong thing by failing to extend enhanced subsidies. The survey of 1,400 people conducted in mid-January revealed that health care costs are Americans' top affordability concern, surpassing even groceries or utilities. Ashley Kirzinger, KFF's director of survey methodology, notes that health care costs will play a major role in midterm voting decisions. The House has shown leadership on this issue. The Senate must follow their example and pass a three-year extension immediately. Your constituents are watching how you prioritize their healthcare needs, and I will hold you accountable in November for the choices you make today.
