As your constituent, I am writing to express my deep concern about the continued use of immigration detention by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). I urge you to oppose funding and policies that expand or perpetuate this system of mass incarceration and to support alternatives that uphold human dignity, due process, and the fundamental rights of all people.
ICE detention centers have long been documented to foster inhumane conditions, including medical neglect, lack of access to legal representation, family separation, and unjustified prolonged confinement. These facilities disproportionately impact people of color and those fleeing violence, poverty, and persecution. Detaining individuals—many of whom pose no threat to public safety—is both cruel and unnecessary.
There are proven community-based alternatives to detention that are far more humane, cost-effective, and consistent with our nation's values. Programs that prioritize case management over incarceration ensure compliance with immigration proceedings while allowing individuals to remain with their families and communities.
I call on you to:
• Oppose any increase in ICE detention beds or funding for immigration detention facilities.
• Support the closure of privately run detention centers and those with documented histories of abuse.
• Advocate for the expansion of community-based alternatives to detention and investments in legal services.
• Push for meaningful oversight and accountability measures for ICE and its enforcement practices.
We must choose compassion over criminalization. I believe in an immigration system rooted in justice, fairness, and respect for human rights—and I urge you to act accordingly.
