Online Safety Act threatens free speech, requires robust safeguards

To: Sen. Klobuchar, Sen. Smith, Rep. Fischbach

From: A constituent in Stephen, MN

December 10

The Kids Online Safety Act raises significant concerns about government overreach and the potential for abuse to silence free speech online. The broad scope and requirements could enable any administration to selectively target and suppress voices or content they oppose under the guise of protecting minors. This threat to free expression on the internet is deeply troubling and arguably an even greater risk than the stated problems the legislation aims to solve. Any efforts to make the online world safer for children must have robust safeguards against government censorship or weaponizing such laws for authoritarian ends.
