Social Security Administration

I am writing to express my deep concern and condemnation of President Donald Trump’s recent actions and rhetoric regarding the Social Security Administration (SSA). His administration’s push to eliminate 7,000 SSA jobs and diminish the agency’s capacity to serve beneficiaries is an attack on the financial security of millions of Americans who rely on these essential benefits. Social Security is a lifeline for 1 in 5 Americans, including seniors, disabled individuals, and survivors who depend on timely and uninterrupted benefits. With an aging population and increasing demand, now is the worst possible time to undercut the agency responsible for delivering these earned benefits. Former Social Security Commissioner Martin O’Malley has warned that these cuts could break the system, leading to benefit delays and potential disruptions that would devastate millions of people. The consequences of these reckless cuts cannot be overstated: Delayed or stopped benefits would push millions of Americans—especially retirees and disabled individuals—into financial hardship, leaving many unable to afford food, housing, and medical care. Longer processing times would leave new claimants waiting months or years for benefits, forcing them to accumulate debt or face severe economic insecurity. Reduced customer service would make it harder for seniors and vulnerable populations to update their information or access assistance, particularly given potential field office closures and increased wait times. The Trump administration’s rhetoric and actions align with long-standing efforts to weaken Social Security. Trump has falsely claimed that the program is plagued by fraud, and his allies have proposed dangerous cuts, including raising the retirement age and reducing benefits for disabled children. Additionally, figures like Elon Musk, now involved in the so-called Department of Government Efficiency, have promoted the harmful notion that Social Security is a "Ponzi scheme." These coordinated attacks signal an alarming shift toward dismantling a program that millions depend on. I urge you to take immediate action to protect Social Security and those who rely on it by: Blocking any staffing cuts or funding reductions that would weaken the SSA’s ability to deliver timely benefits. Ensuring proper oversight to prevent politically motivated decisions from disrupting benefit payments. Publicly opposing any attempts to privatize or cut Social Security benefits under the guise of “efficiency” reforms. Social Security represents a sacred promise to American workers—that after a lifetime of contributions, they will receive the benefits they have earned. We cannot allow a president’s harmful policies to jeopardize the economic security of millions. I implore you to take a strong stand against these attacks and fight for the integrity of the Social Security program.
