We Need Leadership and Action — Now, Not Later
To: Sen. Kim, Rep. Sherrill, Sen. Booker

April 17
I am writing to express my deep concern over the current state of democracy in the United States — and to urge you to take bold, public, coordinated action in response. We are watching the slow-motion collapse of our democratic norms. Rhetoric that would have been unthinkable even a few years ago is now a daily feature of political discourse. Recent events, such as the disturbing alignment of U.S. political figures with authoritarian leaders like Nayib Bukele — including a former president openly endorsing defiance of court orders — underscore how far off course we are heading. What is the Democratic Party doing in response? Where is the organized resistance, the call to action, the urgent messaging that meets the moment? We are told to donate. We are told to vote. But we are not being mobilized. We, the people who care deeply about preserving democracy, are ready to act — but we need leadership that provides structure and direction. I’m asking you to push for the Democratic Party to step up and take meaningful action, including: Forming independent, civilian-powered investigative coalitions to expose wrongdoing and corruption; Urging the United States to join the International Criminal Court and hold global and domestic actors accountable for human rights violations; Educating the public on legal rights, protest strategies, and resistance tactics — especially as civic freedoms face increasing threats; Working with international watchdogs and media to shine a light on abuses and amplify truth; Creating secure platforms for whistleblowers and defectors who want to speak out against corruption and extremism; Studying historical examples of democratic collapse and revival and acting with the urgency those moments demand. These are tangible, achievable actions that show seriousness of purpose. Yet we see few, if any, being pursued. I also want to raise my concern about continued U.S. military aid to Israel in the face of credible, repeated human rights violations. Any support — especially military — must be conditioned on full adherence to international law. A ceasefire and humanitarian aid are not radical demands; they are moral imperatives. This is not a time for neutrality, caution, or political calculation. This is a time to act boldly. The public is watching, history is watching — and some of us are ready to help, if given the tools and leadership to do so. Please don’t meet this moment with silence or half-measures. We need your voice, your action, and your courage.
