Helping the hungry could become a felony in Oklahoma

To: Justices Court

From: A constituent in Palmdale, CA

February 6

To the honorable justices of the Supreme Court, Oklahoma lawmakers have introduced Senate Bill 1554, a bill that would make it a felony for churches and faith groups to feed, clothe, or help someone in need unless they first verify that person’s immigration status. Let that sink in. This bill would criminalize compassion and force churches to act as immigration enforcement instead of places of mercy and service. For many people of faith, helping those in need is not optional. As Jesus taught in Matthew 25:35–36: “I was hungry and you gave me something to eat… I was a stranger and you invited me in.” Under SB 1554, following those words could be a crime. No matter where you stand on immigration policy, we should all agree on this: Helping someone in need should never be a felony. Please add your name and speak out against SB 1554. Let’s protect compassion, religious freedom, and basic human decency in Oklahoma. Thank you for standing up.
