Recognize the Past & Present Nakba in Palestine: Cosponsor H.Res. 1289
To: Rep. Crow
From: A verified voter in Littleton, CO
May 22
I urge you to cosponsor and publicly support H.Res. 1289, Rep. Rashida Tlaib’s resolution recognizing the ongoing Nakba and Palestinian refugees’ rights.
For 78 years, Palestinians have lived with the consequences of mass expulsion, dispossession, exile, and denial. The Nakba is not merely history. It continues through home demolitions, land theft, illegal settlements, siege, forced displacement, denial of return, and now the genocidal destruction of Gaza. Denying this reality is not neutrality; it is complicity.
This resolution does what Congress should have done long ago: officially commemorate the Nakba, reject Nakba denial, support education about this well-documented history, reinstate support for UNRWA’s lifesaving services, affirm Palestinian refugees’ rights under U.N. Resolution 194 and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and end U.S. complicity in the ongoing dispossession of Palestinians.
Congress cannot claim to support human rights while refusing to name the catastrophe Palestinians have endured since 1948, and it cannot claim to support peace while sending weapons and diplomatic cover to the government carrying that catastrophe forward. A just future requires truth, accountability, refugee rights, and an end to U.S. support for ethnic cleansing.
Please cosponsor H.Res. 1289 immediately, urge House leadership to move it forward, reinstate U.S. support for UNRWA, and support legislation and appropriations restrictions that prohibit U.S. weapons from being used to destroy Palestinian homes, forcibly remove Palestinians from their land, or enable further war crimes.
The United States must stop helping Israel erase Palestinians from their homes, history, and homeland. Recognize the ongoing Nakba. Defend Palestinian humanity. Support H.Res. 1289.
