I am your constituent from Vancouver, Washington, and I voted for you.
I am writing to express my serious concern about your January 22nd vote to fund the Department of Homeland Security and your subsequent silence on this decision.
The timeline is straightforward:
January 7: Renee Nicole Good was killed by an ICE agent in Minneapolis
January 22: You voted to provide $10 billion in funding to ICE
January 24: Alex Pretti was killed by federal immigration agents in Minneapolis
While you have called for Secretary Noem's resignation, you have not addressed your own vote or its consequences with your constituents. This is a significant oversight.
Recent polling demonstrates that a clear majority of Americans oppose current ICE operations:
61% believe ICE's tactics have "gone too far" (NY Times/Siena, January 17)
53% say ICE's tactics are too forceful (YouGov, January 9-11)
52% say ICE is making communities less safe (CBS/YouGov, January 14-16)
As your constituent, I expect you to represent the majority view. I am asking you to:
Publicly acknowledge and apologize for your January 22nd vote, taking full accountability for its consequences
Vote against any DHS funding that does not defund ICE by the January 30th deadline
Demonstrate that you are listening to your constituents and to the majority of Americans
I look forward to seeing how you respond to this request.
