The recent tragedy at Apalachee High School, resulting in the loss of four lives, underscores the urgent need for stronger gun control measures. This disaster resonates beyond Winder, Georgia, affecting communities nationwide, including mine in Greene County, Ohio. We cannot continue to accept such events as normal. It is imperative to implement comprehensive gun laws prioritizing public safety. Assault-style weapons should not be accessible to civilians. Measures like universal background checks and bans on high-capacity magazines are essential to prevent firearms from reaching the wrong hands. Every child deserves safety in school, and parents should not fear for their children’s lives.
As a domestic violence prevention educator, I am deeply invested in this issue. I engage with public schools in my county, visiting and guest speaking in classrooms every week. Not only do I care about my own safety while in a school, I also care about this issue as an older sister: I have two siblings in high school, and the thought of losing them, as the families in Winder did, is unfathomable.
Politicians who prioritize the gun lobby over public safety are complicit in preventable deaths. As your constituent, I expect you to represent my political priorities, with stronger gun control being a major issue for me. I am counting on you to give me a voice in your political arena and to take immediate action on gun control legislation.
Please share your stance on this issue and how you plan to reach across the aisle to draft and vote on upcoming bills aimed at stronger gun control. I am committed to voting against officials who would choose partisanship and worshipping at the altar of the firearms industry over our children’s safety. The time for thoughts and prayers has passed; we demand action.
