Investigate Meta’s Suspension of the No Kings Account

To: Sen. Van Hollen, Sen. Alsobrooks, Rep. McClain Delaney

From: A constituent in Frederick, MD

October 23

I am writing to you as a concerned constituent to demand that you use the full extent of your power and authority to investigate the recent actions taken by Meta. As reported by The Guardian on October 18, 2026, Meta temporarily suspended the Instagram account of the No Kings coalition during nationwide pro-democracy protests. This incident is far more than a simple "technical error," as Meta has claimed. The No Kings movement is a legitimate political coalition focused on critical issues like early voter turnout and protecting democratic processes. The fact that their account went dark for several hours during a major protest—only to be restored after significant public outcry—is deeply alarming. It raises the specter of a corporate oligarchy using its immense power to curtail the First Amendment rights of American citizens. The right to free speech and peaceful assembly is the bedrock of our democracy. When a single corporation controls the primary channels of communication for millions of Americans, its ability to silence political organizing is a direct threat to our republic. Meta’s explanation of "high-frequency posting" is insufficient and requires rigorous oversight. As Senator Chris Murphy noted, it is an indictment of Meta's outsized influence on our culture and politics. Our elected officials must not allow private companies to act as arbitrary arbiters of political speech, especially in the lead-up to an election. I urge you to: Initiate a formal investigation into the circumstances surrounding the suspension of the No Kings account. Demand full transparency from Meta regarding their content moderation algorithms and the specific triggers that led to this suspension. Examine whether Meta's policies and automated systems are being used to systematically suppress political speech that the company or its leadership disfavors. Hold hearings to address the growing threat of corporate censorship and the concentration of power in the hands of a few tech monopolies. Curtailing Americans' First Amendment rights by a corporate oligarchy is never acceptable. Meta has admitted its error and apologized, but an apology is not enough. We need a thorough investigation to ensure this does not happen again. The integrity of our upcoming elections and the health of our democracy depend on it.
