I am writing as your constituent to urge you to oppose the SAVE America Act.
I support secure elections and believe election laws should be enforced. However, I do not believe this bill improves election security in a way that justifies the barriers it would create for eligible American citizens.
Requiring documentary proof of citizenship to register to vote would place new burdens on millions of eligible voters who may not have immediate access to passports, certified birth certificates, or other qualifying documents. Replacing these documents can be costly and time-consuming, particularly for seniors, military families, rural residents, and those whose names have changed through marriage or adoption.
Federal law already prohibits non-citizens from voting, and existing systems provide multiple safeguards to verify voter eligibility. Before adding new requirements that could prevent eligible citizens from registering or voting, Congress should demonstrate that such measures are necessary and proportional to a documented problem.
Our democracy is strongest when elections are both secure and accessible. I urge you to oppose the SAVE America Act and instead support reforms that strengthen election security without making it harder for eligible Americans to exercise their constitutional right to vote.
Thank you for your service and for considering my views.
