The issue of conversion therapy and its harmful impacts on LGBTQIA+ youth is deeply concerning. Overwhelming evidence from medical professionals and human rights organizations shows that these practices are ineffective, unethical, and put individuals at heightened risk for mental health issues like depression, substance abuse, and suicidal behavior. Despite being widely discredited, a disturbing number of practitioners still offer conversion therapy across the country, preying on vulnerable youth and their families. Protecting our youth from this fraudulent and damaging practice must be a priority. Comprehensive bans on conversion therapy for minors are crucial steps to safeguard their wellbeing and affirm that this pseudoscientific practice has no legitimacy. Such legislation sends a powerful message that our state values the dignity and equality of LGBTQIA+ individuals. Given the overwhelming evidence of harm, we have an ethical obligation to outlaw these ineffective and predatory practices that inflict severe psychological distress on young people. Robust legal protections will help prevent lifelong trauma and allow LGBTQIA+ youth to receive the affirmation and support they need to thrive. I urge you to prioritize legislation banning conversion therapy to defend the welfare of our state's youth.
