Prioritize funding for public education over private vouchers

To: Gov. Cooper, Sen. Hise, Rep. Pickett

From: A constituent in Boone, NC

September 7

Public schools are the backbone of our education system and play a vital role in shaping the future of our communities. However, the proposal to divert a substantial amount of funding towards private school vouchers raises concerns about the potential adverse impact on public education. While school choice is a valid consideration, it should not come at the expense of compromising the quality and resources available to public schools. The proposed expansion of the Opportunity Scholarship program, amounting to $463.5 million for the next two years, represents a significant investment in private education. This funding could have been better utilized to address the pressing needs of public schools, such as hiring and retaining qualified teachers, providing adequate resources, and ensuring a conducive learning environment for all students. Public schools serve a diverse population, including students from various socioeconomic backgrounds and with different educational needs. Redirecting funds towards private institutions may exacerbate existing disparities and limit access to quality education for those who cannot afford private school tuition, even with the aid of vouchers. Furthermore, public schools are accountable to the community and subject to rigorous academic standards and oversight, ensuring transparency and a commitment to providing a well-rounded education. Private schools, on the other hand, may not be held to the same level of scrutiny or have the same obligations to serve the public interest. It is crucial to prioritize investments in public education to ensure that all children, regardless of their circumstances, have access to high-quality educational opportunities. Strengthening public schools through adequate funding, supportive policies, and a commitment to excellence will benefit not only individual students but also the broader society by cultivating an educated and skilled workforce. Therefore, it is imperative to reconsider the allocation of resources and strike a balance that supports public education while respecting the choice of parents who prefer private alternatives. By investing in public schools and addressing their needs, we can create a stronger foundation for the future of our state and its citizens.
